This Old Exchange building was completed in 1771 and has witnessed over two and a half centuries of American history. During the American Revolution, the British used it as a prison, known as a provost. In 1788, the US Constitution was ratified here by South Carolina leaders. And in 1791, George Washington was honored here with extravagant dinners and balls during his tour through the South. This Exchange building has endured many iterations over the years, and today it is preserved as a museum.
Look for Casper, our black cat mascot, sitting on the railing, taking in all the history.
