In 1866, Congress appropriated funds to build a new, permanent lighthouse made from iron along the Lake Erie coast at Vermilion. Cast in Buffalo, New York, the iron used for the lighthouse was recycled from smooth-bored Colombian cannons that had been rendered obsolete after the Battle of Fort Sumter in the American Civil War.
In 1929, it was removed and replaced with a steel tower. The old iron lighthouse was transported back to Buffalo, where it was later reinstalled as the East Charity Shoal Light in 1935.
