Cedar Hill, also known as the Frederick Douglass National Historic Site, is located in Washington, DC
Frederic Douglas is known as the Father of the Civil Rights Movement in the United States. He escaped from slavery in Maryland and authored three books about his experiences.
Cedar Hill was built between 1855 and 1859 for John Welsh Van Hook, who established the Union Land Association with his partners John Fox and John Dobler. Frederick purchased Cedar Hill and resided there until his death on February 20, 1895.
Congress designated this a National Historic Site in 1988.
