William Browne, confiscated by the Massachusetts legislature, given to Elias Hasket Derby, transferred to John Derby III and Benjamin Pickman, Jr, who finally donated it to the town of Salem in 1816 with a requirement that a Town Hall and Market House be built there. This building stopped being the center of local government in 1836\/37 when a new City Hall was built.\u003cbr\u003eThis Town Hall was the cornerstone of the Derby Square redevelopment program started in the mid-1970s, and it’s the oldest existing municipal building in Salem. William C. Endicott purchased it in 1870, where he hosted many famous visitors during his tenure as Massachusetts Supreme Court Justice and Secretary Of War under President Grover Cleveland. In 1894, Daniel Low, retail merchant and friend of the Endicotts, bought this home and lived there until 1919.\u003cbr\u003eThis Georgian Colonial house still shows off most of its original architecture features. It was built in 1804 for Amos (schoolmaster) and Solomon (shipmaster) Towne.
