The present tower was built in 1867 and stands 142 feet high. Located in the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge, it sits on a natural bluff 22 feet above sea level, adding to the height and visibility. When the lighthouse was first constructed, it was situated on the southern tip of Assateague Island. It is now almost five miles from the Chincoteague Inlet due to the constant deposit of sand by the sea. The distinctive double flash from its dual lights sets it apart from other east coast lighthouses. Registered in the National Register of Historic Places, it is still an active navigational aid.
