The original location of the mission was overlooking the bay; however, it didn’t contain a reliable water source. It was moved after five years to a place that would be more suitable for growing crops. In 1775, disgruntled Diegueno Indigenous people rioted and burned the mission down which was replaced by a fortress mission in 1779.  Architects J. Marshall Miller and J. E.
