The second floor in this home, owned by Jacob & Maria Graff, was rented by Thomas Jefferson (with Robert Hemmings, his enslaved valet) from May 23 thru September 3, 1776, while he attended the Second Continental Congress sessions. Famously, this is where Jefferson drafted the Declaration of Independence. By 1881, after many owners, this building was torn down. But, in 1975, the National Park Service reconstructed this home in its 1776 appearance for America’s Bicentennial. Today, you can visit this home to view exhibits and period furnishings.
