With Thomas Jefferson's purchase of Louisiana from Napoleon at about 3 cents an acre, the procurement of what is today the better part of 11 states between the Mississippi River and the Rocky Mountains nearly doubled the size of the United States in 1803. The Lewis & Clark National Historic Trail was designated as a National Historic Trail in 1978.
