Originally constructed as a fortress by William the Conqueror to guard the western approach to London, the castle remains a working Palace and an official residence of the Queen. The castle provides a step back in history; St. Georges's Chapel is the burial place of ten sovereigns and the home of the Order of the Garter, Britain's highest Order of Chivalry, founded in 1348. Almost every monarch has added their own personal touch to the grounds, from Henry I's additions converting it from a fortress to a palace, to Edward III building the great round tower and Norman edifice, to a new garden, the first since the 1820's, created in celebration of the Golden Jubilee of Her Majesty The Queen.
