This theater is known as "America's First Theater." It opened with a performance of "The Recruiting Officer" in 1736. It is thought to have been destroyed in a 1740 fire that affected a large section of downtown Charleston.
Rebuilt in 1809, the theater came back to life as a hotel. It declined through the Civil War and Depression but was once again renovated and reopened as a theater in 1937.
Today the theater is owned by the city of Charleston and open to the public.
