The Allegheny Portage Railroad was the first railroad to conquer the Allegheny Mountains. Samuel and Jean Lemon operated the Lemon House as a tavern along the tracks of the state-run Portage from when it opened in 1834 until the late 1840s. They sold coal, wood, water, and stone to the railroad. Their business connections with the Portage led them to become some of the wealthiest residents in the surrounding area in the mid 19th century.
The 36-mile-long railroad operated from 1834 to 1857 and connected two parts of the Pennsylvania Main Line Canal. The opening of the canal and railroad greatly reduced travel time between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh from over three weeks to around five days.
The Lemon House still stands today, in Gallitzin, and is among the most important historical resources at Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic Site.
