The Buckeye Tree was adopted by the state of Ohio in 1953, and today, Ohio is known as the "Buckeye State". Native Americans gave the tree its name because the brown shiny seed looks like the eye of a buck deer. Superstitious people carry a buckeye for good luck and many have childhood memories of stringing buckeye seeds into necklaces. Many Ohio State University Buckeye fans wear Buckeye paraphernalia during football season!
