On October 17, 1777, after two fierce battles and a siege, British General John Burgoyne surrendered to American General Horatio Gates by offering his sword to General Gates, who then returned it in the fashion of the time. This victory has been termed “the turning point of the Revolution.” It was this win that General Washington needed to persuade the French to support The Cause.
